Having gravel in your flowerbeds can be a great alternative to using mulch, and it works well for adding a touch of decor, preventing weeds, and more. Gravel is also a very low-maintenance option for your yard, but this does not mean that it doesn't need any TLC at all. These are a few tips that can help you maintain the gravel in your flowerbeds so that it looks its best:
1. Deal with Weeds
For one thing, even though having gravel in your flower beds can help you prevent weeds, it does not prevent them entirely. Weeds can ruin the look of your flower beds and can even take over and prevent your flowers and other preferred plants from growing and thriving. Therefore, it's important to get rid of them. Using a weed killer that is safe for use on your flowers can be one good option, or you can pull them out by hand.
2. Get Rid of Leaves
During the fall, you may have to worry about leaves finding their way into your flowerbeds, which can cover up your decorative gravel and can make your flowerbeds look messy. This can be a particularly troublesome problem if you have a lot of trees in your yard. Luckily, gravel and landscaping rock is usually heavy enough that you can still use a leaf blower, although you will not want to point the leaf blower directly at the gravel unless you want it to be blown around. You can also use a rake to gather up leaves so that you can remove them.
3. Spread Out the Gravel
Over time, you can expect for the gravel in your flowerbeds to become uneven. This isn't quite as attractive as a nice, neat flowerbed, and it might mean that all of your flowers won't get the full benefit of the gravel being in the flowerbeds, either. Therefore, occasionally, it's a good idea to use a rake or other garden tool to spread out your gravel so that it's nice and even. You might also find that you will periodically need to add in more gravel as some of it washes away, although this is not as much of a concern with gravel as it is with mulch.
As you can see, there are a few tips that you can follow if you want to maintain the gravel in your flowerbeds. By following these tips, you can make sure that your flowerbeds look great and that you can take full advantage of the benefits of your gravel.Share
